WHAT is the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC)?

The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) is held biennially and gathers more than 22,000 Catholic teens, parish youth ministry coordinators, bishops, pastors, parents, school campus ministers, adult chaperones, coaches, scout leaders, and diocesan leaders. The conference is sponsored by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) and offers a three-day experience for young people to encounter Christ, experience church, and be empowered for discipleship. NCYC offers opportunities for prayer, service, reconciliation, Eucharist, and recreation. NCYC began in 1983 as a regional conference, with sessions held on the East and West Coasts. NCYC was merged into a national conference in 1991. The 2017 NCYC takes place November 16-18 in Indianapolis with the theme Called – Llamados. WHO attends NCYC?

High School age youth

Many youth participants are leaders in their local parishes, Catholic schools and/or diocese, though many are just beginning to connect to their faith. Some attendees may have participated in previous national or international events such as the World Youth Day. Many are experiencing this type of gathering for the first time.

Besides accompanying a group of youth to NCYC, there is programming especially targeted to enrich and support adult youth ministry leaders and catechists in their ministry.

There is a special parent-track for continued adult learning and formation, enrichment and support for parenting youth, and creating strong Catholic families in the current times and culture.

Parents

NFCYM requires that chaperones be 21 years or older. The diocesan group must have at least two chaperones for first one to ten youth and one additional adult for each additional one to six youth.

Chaperones

Bishops, priests, and deacons have the opportunity to learn more about youth culture and engage with youth by serving in a variety of ecclesial roles including: presiding at masses and prayer services, sacrament of reconciliation, participate in interactive theme park, and help lead service projects with attendees. There is a special vocations area in the theme park to discuss vocations and provide youth with opportunities to ask questions and discern their call.
